The earth tone colors mixed with the simple elegance of the floral grouping make this a garland suitable for showcasing almost any photo. Combined with masculine embroidery motifs, this arrangement works well to commemorate a graduation or other event in the life of a special gentleman.

Supplies

Note: These supplies are in addition to the "General Supplies" found in "All-Occasion Garlands" on page 76 of the CME's Paper & Embroidery 2006 issue.

• Art paper
• Coordinating card stock for backing
• Simple floral stems (include at least one very firm
  style to act as the main support)
• Metal brads
• Textured fiber for hang cord
• Self adhesive metal accents
• Brown ink pad
• Repositionable tape
• Embroidery designs of your choice, including one
  no larger than 2 1/4" diameter

Construction

• Use wire and floral tape to secure floral stems together to create the needed length of the garland floral base.
• Determine the finished size of the embroidered frames. Using a pencil and acrylic ruler, mark the finished frame size and opening.
  Trim design templates; adhere to the paper with repositionable tape.
• Cut art paper to fit the embroidery hoop. Hoop paper-release adhesive stabilizer (hoop with the liner side up). Score the paper around the inside perimeter of the hoop and peel back the paper to expose the adhesive. Press the paper in place. Line up the guide marks on the template. Use the machine’s on screen editing features to position design over the paper template, if available. Remove the template and embroider.
• Trim the finished piece with a wavy cutter following the marked finished frame line. Cut out the inside of the frame on the marked line.
• Convert to sewing mode. Attach the clear foot to the machine and select a straight stitch. Stitch around the inside edge of the frame, approximately 1/4" from cut edge, stopping at the embroidery. Repeat around the outer edge.
• Add decorative stitch accents to the frame as desired.
• Complete the remaining frames. Crop the photos and adhere to the frames.
• Embroider small coordinating embroidery motifs on art paper. Trim to the desired size. Straight stitch 1/8” from cut edges. Add small brads to top and bottom of each small coordinate piece.
• Run all elements through the Xyron.
• To complete the grouping: Remove Xyron backing sheet from the small coordinate pieces. Position the desired distance apart on a flat surface. Cut a length of fiber (twice the desired hanging length), fold in half and adhere to the back of the paper, loop at the top of the grouping—tails do not extend past the last segment of the grouping. Adhere coordinating paper to the back of the segments. Trim the excess backing paper from around the pieces. Ink the edges of the paper for an antique look.
• To complete individual frames: Remove the Xyron backing sheet from the wrong side of the frame. Cut a length of fiber (twice the desired hanging length), fold in half and adhere to the back of the paper; loop at the top. Adhere coordinating paper to the back of the frame. Trim the excess backing paper. Attach a decorative brad to the frame upper edge. Ink the edges of the paper.
• Tie each frame and grouping to the garland.
• Screw small cup-hooks to the underside of the mantel, or use temporary hooks. Firm stems will sit directly in the cup hooks.
