Recycled Jeans Gift Bag

Recycle an old pair of jeans into cute gift bags, appropriate for almost any occasion.

We featured a pillow project and other ideas for showcasing embroidery-embellished buttonholes in "Buttonhole Fasten-ation" in our January/February '07 issue (click here for back issue ordering information). Just for our online readers, here's one more!

Supplies

  • Jeans, adult size
  • 1 yard of 1”-wide grosgrain ribbon
  • Adhesive tear-away and tear-away stabilizers
  • Removable marker
  • Buttonhole embroidery design of your choice

Construction

  • Cut off one jeans leg 14” above the hem. Keep the remaining portion of the jeans for another project, or make a second bag from the other leg.
  • Turn the leg section wrong side out and examine the seams. Most jeans have a thick felled outseam and a serged inseam. Plan the embroidery placements to avoid the thick felled seam.
  • If the leg is wide enough, it can be embroidered without opening a seam by working with the leg wrong side out and adhering it to the stabilizer. If the embroidery will cross the serged inseam, remove the overcasting stitches and press the seam open to reduce bulk. If the leg is too narrow, remove the inseam stitches from the cut edge to the hem (leaving the hem intact) and plan the embroidery to skip over the open seam.
  • Using a removable marker, draw a line 2” from the hem. This marks the upper edge of the embroidery (the hem will form the upper edge of the bag). Mark locations for an even number of embellished buttonholes around the pant leg.
  • Hoop the adhesive stabilizer, score the perimeter with a pin and peel back the paper to reveal the adhesive. Adhere the jeans leg so the first embroidery location is centered. Slide a sheet of tear-away stabilizer under the hoop and embroider (A). Repeat for the remaining buttonholes.
  • Remove the excess stabilizer and press. Carefully slit the buttonholes. Re-stitch the inseam if it was opened for embroidery.
  • With right sides together, sew the cut edge of the leg with a 1/2” seam.
  • Fold one bag side to meet the bottom seam and stitch perpendicular to the seam 1 1/2” from the corner to box the bag bottom. Repeat for the second side. Note: The jeans seams may not lie along the bag side folds.
  • Thread the ribbon through the buttonholes. Cut the ribbon ends at an angle and tie into a bow.
