From fabric prints to embellishments, we’re having a major love affair with all things southwestern, including (and hence!) our new embroidery design collection, Southwest Story. When we were deciding what feature project to make with the collection, we had a bazillion ideas, and eventually landed on the denim skirt and cuff set from the March/April issue.
The collection includes a variety of motifs and borders that we want to put on everything this spring and summer. In the spirit of sharing that inspiration, we’ve collected some of our favorite southwest embroidered finds below, with quick tips on how you can recreate the look. And, don’t forget to download the free southwest design here!
A jean jacket is our must-have spring outerwear pick. And how cute with the embroidered border and tassels (our other, other favorite!). You could sew a jean jacket from scratch or easily modify a readymade jacket with embroidered trim. For a lighter weight, go the jean vest route.
While we’re talking denim, we love this subtle use of a border design along the side seam of these jeans! Our Sawtooth Border would be perfect for this, with just the right amount of southwest flavor. For a statement piece, combine designs on the back of a denim shirt (below). Again, you could go the from scratch or the upcycled route: either way, you’ll end up with a one-of-a-kind piece for spring and summer.
We love a statement blouse with embroidered details. Pick a basic knit tee pattern, and combine motifs and borders on the center front to create a top like this swingy tee. Or embellish a solid kimono (seen here with flowers) to create a southwestern layering piece, perfect with jean shorts. The Diamond Border would look perfect along the kimono collar.
And don’t forget artful items for the home! This sheet set is perfect for a themed guest room…or, you know, my room. Our hand-drawn-style landscape musings border designs would be perfect along the top of sheets or on the edge of a pillowcase. And now I want one!
