Oh how I love holiday embroidery designs. Not only are they great for festive home decor, but using holiday themed designs for gifts is a wonderful way to bring a touch of handmade into the holiday season.
Making your own cards is one way to utilize your embroidery designs, and stitching on paper is easier than you might think. Hoop an adhesive-backed sticky stabilizer with the paper side facing up. Score the paper and tear it away to reveal the adhesive within the hoop frame. Position the card where you want it in the hoop and stitch. Be sure to choose a design that doesn’t have a lot of fill stitches to avoid perforating the paper. And make sure your card is heavyweight card stock. After the embroidery is complete, cut away the stabilizer near the design edges and then glue a piece of lightweight decorative paper to the inside of the card to conceal the stabilizer and bobbin threads.
Or, embroider a phrase using a fun font onto a fabric rectangle. Cut out the rectangle 2″ beyond the phrase, and then hem the edges. Glue the fabric onto a second fabric rectangle, and then onto the front of the card. This is a great way to conceal an older card that you may want to recycle, too!
In-the-hoop projects are great gift ideas. This gift tag doubles as an ornament. You can also stash some cash or a gift card inside. Personalize the cuff with the recipient’s name or leave it blank. Make these assembly-line style and crank out 10 in no time!
This Garland Greeting design collection makes a great wall hanging project, but you can also embroider individual ornaments personalized with initials to give as gift tags or place cards at the dinner table.
Who doesn’t love a snow globe? These are made entirely in the hoop, with instructions for layering felt with clear vinyl and inserting glitter to act as snow. Super fun project to involve the kiddos in creating this season.
Cardinals are popping up in rustic home-dec items and more modern dinnerware this year. This timeless collection is perfect for a table runner or kitchen towel set, and it lasts beyond the Christmas season into the rest of winter.
Border designs are great for stocking cuffs, and this one is super cute and kid-friendly.
This in-the-hoop Snowflake Coaster set is a perfect gift for Bunco pals or teachers. It lasts beyond Christmas and you can choose fabric that matches the recipient’s home decor instead of a holiday print, if desired.
Bring on the Christmas Cheer with this collection of three designs, which are perfect for bathroom towels, robes or cards.
And I love a jolly old St Nick. This design is part of our Retro Christmas collection, and it definitely brings back feelings of Christmas past.
Whatever you’re making people to give as gifts this year, I hope these designs have inspired you to put a touch of handmade into your holiday!
