Sew it All TV 13 Days of Giveaways Day 6: Win a free April Rhodes Pattern!

It’s Day 6 of our Sew it All TV 13 Days of Giveaways, and we have two more awesome prizes to give away! April Rhodes is a pattern and fabric designer and is also one of this season’s super-talented guests. She is generously donating two of her lovely patterns for today’s prizes. One winner will win a copy of the lovely and versatile Staple Dress pattern, and the other will receive the The Riding Peplum & Party Dress pattern. I’ve made my own Staple Dress and I highly recommend it; it’s such a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down for any occasion. Plus, get sneak peek at April’s episode from the upcoming season!

But first, congrats to yesterday’s winners of Christine Haynes’ patterns and book! They winners are Kristina, Tina L., Alexis, Judy H., Arianna and Ashley P.! Check your inbox for more details.

When April visited Sew it All, she demonstrated how to stitch up a very cute and on-trend paper-bag waist skirt with in-seam side pockets. April showed how easy it is to insert in-seam pockets into any skirt or dress, even if the pattern doesn’t originally include it! And really, who doesn’t love pockets?

  1. Mary Mac says:

I add just a little to my patterns because in the past I found myself calling for help when looked liked it came out of a science fiction magazine.

  2. Tamara says:

I use the pattern as a guide and almost always will make changes.

  3. Bree Crocetti says:

    Word for word

  4. Deb Cooper says:

I follow the instructions totally, most often. Since I have an embroidery machine I do incorporate that into many patterns. Also, if I’ve learned an easier or quicker way to do something I use it.

  5. Peggy A. says:

I usually follow the pattern exactly the first time. After that I add or change to suit myself. Always fun to play with patterns once you understand them.

  6. Carol K E says:

I, too, tend to follow the instructions the first time. After that, I make changes. And I nearly always add pockets, even to ready to wear

  7. Derenda Laws says:

I usually follow the pattern for the construction. But the trim or embellishment I’ll change to suit what I have in mind. Occasionally I’ll alter the construction if I really want a different look.

  8. diane says:

I like to follow the pattern on the first try, then on the secong make, I adjust and add my own flair!

  9. kelli says:

It depends on the pattern. The last skirt I made that had a zipper, I decided to make an elastic waistband instead.

  10. Debrah says:

I stick to the pattern as written for sure on the first try.

  11. Susan F says:

Depending upon the event where I require a new outfit and the amount of money I wish to spend, I might change a pattern. Of course, if the pattern has numerous details, I will make a sample first to ensure it fits then I definitely will change the pattern – change details, add pockets, add trims, change the neckline, etc.

  12. Becky Hill says:

I stick to the pattern for the first time. Then I will make changes the next time I use that pattern.

  13. debra merrill says:

I am just learning to sew but I already seem to envision changes whether I am able to improve upon the pattern or not! Sometimes they just make a situation worse (anyone ever seen a bed caddy with bias tape twisted and twice the number of pockets added because it should look cute?) or a situation better (a girls skirt can look better with additional fancy open weave ribbon, not adding the flounce and changing zipper to elastic with casing!). Sometimes it pays off and sometimes the pattern should just be left alone…

  14. Evelyn says:

First I read through all the instructions, then I decide whether to follow them exactly or not. Most patterns I make get personalized in some way or another. I’ve been wanting to make a Staple Dress ever since I first saw in online. It sure looks like a great pattern.

  15. Kathy Scoggins says:

I tend to buy patterns for a particular design feature and not for the whole pattern. Sometimes I never actually cut anything from the pattern, but just so I can see how a particular item was created.

  16. Malia Oswald says:

I use the pattern directions as a suggestion… And make little changes here and there:)

  17. carol says:

I follow the instructions on the first go round, then adapt to make it more to my liking after that.

  18. Vanessa B says:

I purchase patterns I like and then adjust certain steps in the instructions to how I like to do them…yes, lazy girl here :-) Thank You!

  19. Carol Brown says:

I pretty much follow the pattern since I’m not to good at sewing – but learning. : )

  20. Diane Baker says:

I usually read all the instructions, then adjust for my own taste (I’m 66 yr old and have been sewing for about 56 years.) But I have learned that I almost always learn something new with each new pattern I purchase – especially if it’s from an independent pattern company. So many of the younger people have fun, new twists on our old practices! Ellen, thank you for such a creative collection of publications.

  21. Dorothy Urberg says:

I usually follow the pattern but sometime make changes

  22. Gina H. says:

I always love trying new patterns. I usually follow the pattern instructions closely the first time and then try to personalize it the next time.

  23. Lorrie Henry says:

I always read all the instructions and I almost never follow the exact pattern. LOL! There are times when it will get me in trouble, but I do love trying new patterns, designs and ideas.
