This July marks my son’s first birthday. I can’t wait to see what he’ll do when presented with a big cupcake full of frosting. Not only do I want to make him homemade cupcakes, but I also want to make him something handmade to celebrate the occasion—ideally something personalized with embroidery. He has plenty of blankets, onesies and toys, so it’s difficult to decide on a project that he’ll have as a reminder of this special event.

This challenge prompted me to peruse all 11 years of Creative Machine Embroidery issues to find just the right gift to make for my little one. After sifting through tons of great gift ideas, I’ve compiled my top 10 Birthday Present Projects into one great list. Find it at cmemag.com/articles/Birthday_Projects. Granted, some gift ideas aren’t appropriate for my one-year-old son, but they’re so cute that I had to include them! I hope this list comes in handy if you have a birthday party to attend this summer.

After deriving inspiration from the list, I was inspired to create my own project with cupcakes in mind. I chose a simple appliqué number collection and stitched out the number 1 using a fun print fabric. Then I mirrored the design and stitched it again. I placed the numbers with wrong sides together and sandwiched a toothpick between the lower edges. To finish, I hand tacked the numbers together, securing the toothpick with extra stitches. The result is one great cupcake topper that I can put into my son’s scrapbook after the party’s over. See the results at left.

Another great reason for summer sewing is July 4. And with hundreds upon hundreds of patriotic-themed embroidery designs available in cyberspace, you’ll have fun deciding how to embellish the cozy blanket on page 34. With all of this bonus content, you’ll be busy sewing and embroidering all summer long! Send photos of your birthday presents and July 4 projects to info@cmemag.com. Or add them to our Facebook page at facebook.com/creativemachineembroidery. Plus, post images of the projects you’ve made from this issue on our community site: sewingdistrict.com. You could be chosen as a featured Sewing District member and win a fabulous prize! See page 66 for more details.

Have a wonderful summer!
