Boot Camp

Give ordinary boots a special look by adding embroidery designs and embellishments. Make a removable boot band to add style in a snap.

SHOPPING LIST

Lace-Up Boots

  • pair of lace-up boots
  • water-soluble stabilizer
  • removable fabric marker
  • embroidery thread
  • hot-fix crystals, nail heads or pearls (optional)
  • embroidery designs

Instructions

  • Print a template of the chosen design.
  • Audition the design placement on the boot,making sure the design is visible when the boots are laced.
  • Using a removable fabric maker, mark the design placement on the tongue of each boot.
  • Hoop a piece of water-soluble stabilizer. Position the tongue over the stabilizer, centering the design (A). Finger-press to adhere the tongueto the stabilizer.

  • Embroider the design. Hold the boot while embroidering, if necessary.
  • Once the embroidery is complete, remove the hoop from the machine and the tongue from the stabilizer.
  • Repeat to embroider the remaining boot tongue.
  • Embellish the design with hot-fix crystals, nail heads or pearls, if desired.

Ankle-High Pull-On Boots

  • pair of ankle-high pull-on boots
  • 1⁄4 yard of coordinating polyester organza
  • water-soluble stabilizer
  • removable fabric marker
  • transparent permanent fabric glue
  • embroidery thread
  • hot-fix crystals, nail heads or pearls (optional)
  • embroidery designs

Instructions

  • Hoop two layers of water-soluble stabilizer with a single layer of organza that’s large enough for the selected design.
  • Embroider the design twice on the organza for the first boot. Mirror image the design and embroider the design twice on the organza for the second boot
  • Once the embroidery is complete, remove the hoop from the machine and the embroidery from the hoop. Carefully trim around each design (B).

 

 

  • Soak the designs in warm water to remove the stabilizer. Allow to dry completely.
  • Position the designs on the boot, as desired. Once satisfied with the placement, mark the location using a removable fabric marker.
  • Apply transparent permanent fabric glue to each design wrong side. Carefully adhere the designs over each placement mark; let the glue dry completely.
  • Embellish each design with hotfix crystals or nails, if desired.

Removable Boot Band

  • 1⁄2 yard of faux sheepskin
  • removable fabric marker
  • adhesive-backed water-soluble stabilizer
  • transparent permanent fabric glue
  • 8" strip of self-adhesive hook-and-loop tape
  • thread: all-purpose, bobbin & embroidery
  • embroidery designs

Instructions

  • Measure the widest diameter of the boot calf area of the desired boot; record. Measure the desired height; record. Add 1⁄2" seam allowances to each measurement; record. Cut out a faux sheepskin rectangle according to the measurements.
  • Print a template of the chosen design. Using a removable fabric marker, mark the design center onto the sheepskin.
  • Hoop a piece of adhesive-backed water-soluble stabilizer. Center the sheepskin right side up over the stabilizer; finger-press to adhere the sheepskin to stabilizer.
  • Embroider the design. Once the embroidery is complete, remove the hoop from the machine and the sheepskin from the hoop. Fold the sheepskin lower edge 1⁄2" toward the sheepskin right side; pin (C).

 

 

  • Fold the sheepskin upper edge 1⁄2", upper corners 2" and the side edges 1⁄2" toward the right side; pin (D). Position the band around the boot, making sure the band edges overlap (E).

 

  • Set the stitch length to 3mm. Using a 3⁄8" seam allowance, stitch along the lower folded edge. Stitch the upper edge, and then the side edges.
  • Apply a thin layer of fabric glue to each hook-and-loop tape wrong side. Position the hook piece on the lower left corner of the sheepskin right side, and the loop piece on the lower left corner of the sheepskin wrong side (F). Allow the glue to dry completely.

 

 

  • Wrap the band around the boot; secure using the hookand- loop tape.
